Hello Parents,

October is going to be a fun month for the scouts.  To ensure that the scouts will not be missing out, the following is an outline of what will be happening for October.

Important information needed as soon as possible:

Head count for the Night Hike—please let Tonya and/or Richard know how many are going (scout plus how many?)  We must have a firm headcount by October 8.

If your scout is new and has not completed the Bobcat Trail yet, this will be done at the Night Hike.  If your scout will participate in this please notify Tonya or Richard asap so we can let Katrina know to get the awards.

October 8

No Den Meeting

Head count is due for the Night Hike.

You will be receiving an email with an update on popcorn sales.  This will list what quantities each scout originally received.  Please reply to this email with what your scout has sold and what you will need to order from the preorder sale.  Reply needs to be received by October 15th.

October 15th

Our October pack meeting will be a Night Hike.  There is a cost of $5 for each non-scout (scouts are covered by the pack).  If you have not paid your $60 registration your scout is not insured…please contact Tonya or Richard about this asap.

The Night Hike is going to be held at the Tallahassee Natural History Museum (formerly known as the Junior Museum for us old-timers <grin>).  The gates will close at 6:30, so please be there a little early!  Bring flashlights and/or headlamps!

Please bring any remaining popcorn that you do not think  you will be able to sale with you to the Night Hike.  If you cannot make it to this meeting, please notify Richard of what quantities of popcorn you have.

Headcount:  Please let Richard and Tonya know if your family will be attending the Cub Family Camping Weekend at Wallwood.  Our pack will be serving dinner on Saturday (just for our pack).  We need a headcount so we’ll prepare enough spaghetti!)

October 22nd

Popcorn Reckoning:  Scout’s preorder sale and any leftover popcorn needs to be turned in at this den meeting.  Please bring any leftover popcorn to this Pack meeting.  If your scout cannot make it to the pack meeting to return the popcorn, please contact Richard Le.  Note:  you are responsible for any popcorn that was taken for the door-to-door sale.  The scout’s family is responsible for either returning the unsold popcorn or for the cost of any popcorn not returned.

Den meeting: for this den meeting, we will be working two achievements:

Achievement 16 - BUILD A MODEL (Bear Handbook - Page 156)

Achievement 9 - WHAT'S COOKING? (Bear Handbook - Page 80).

For Achievement 16:  There are three requirements for the completion of this achievement.  We will do 2 in the meeting and your scout will do the remaining achievement at home.  Requirement A and B will done at this meeting and requirement G will be done at home.

Requirements to be completed at the den meeting are:

A.) Build a model from a kit.

B.) Build a display for one of your models.

Do at home:

G.) Complete the Character Connection for Resourcefulness:

Know:  Review the requirements for this achievement and list the resources you would need to complete them.  Then list the materials you could substitute for items that you do not already have.  Tell what it means to be resourceful.

Commit:  After you complete the requirements for this achievement, list any changes that would make the results better if you did these projects again.  Tell why it is important to consider all available resources for a project.

Practice:  While you complete the requirements for this achievement, make notes on which materials worked well in your projects and why.

For Achievement 9 we will do 2 of the 4 requirements.  We will be working on requirements D and E.  The scout should choose two requirements from the remaining list and complete them at home.  Be sure to let Tonya or Richard know which requirements the scout chose to complete this achievement.

Requirements to be completed at the den meeting:

D.) Make a list of the “junk foods” you eat.  Discuss “junk food” with a parent or teacher.

E.) Make some trail food for a hike.

Do at home (choose 2):

A.) With an adult, bake cookies.

B.) With an adult, make snacks for the next den meeting.

C.) With an adult, prepare one part of your breakfast, one part of your lunch, and one part of your supper.

F.) With an adult, make a dessert for your family.

G.) With an adult, cook something outdoors.

October 23-25

Cub Family Weekend:  We will be heading “West” on along the Wallwood Trail.  The journey will be long, but it will be an exciting adventure.

October 29

No Den Meeting—Woo Hoo!!  Have some great family time!

Whew!!  If you read all the way to the end you now know how much our boys (and us too!) will be doing in the month of October.  Thanks for hanging in there with us – the boys will definitely be deriving multiple benefits from all our busy-ness this month, but hang in there!!!  We’ll have a great time too J

Cheers and smiles,

Richard and Tonya
